Prospects looked dim for the Colorado Rockies heading into the ninth inning at Coors Field last night.

Down 9-3 to the impressive St. Louis Cardinals, the Rockies managed to pull off the best come-from-behind victory in franchise history, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the ninth, punctuated by a three-run, walk-off home run by outfielder Seth Smith for a 12-9 win.

“I know people come up in that situation and want to hit [a home run],” Smith (pictured) tells The Denver Post. “But I swear I wasn’t. I just didn’t want to make my second out in the inning.”

Also key in the rally: Chris Ianetta (who belted a home run), Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gonzalez, Jason Giambi, and Miguel Olivo (MLB.com has a video of every crazy ninth-inning run).

The Mile High Magic is receiving national attention, with USA Today calling it the biggest bottom-of-the-ninth comeback on the record books—which date back to 1918. Adding to the bliss, the San Diego Padres suffered an unlikely loss to the Washington Nationals last night, so the Rockies have gained a game on the division leaders.

A peek at the MLB.com standings shows the Rockies perched just four games off the lead (a game behind the Dodgers for second place) and seven games above .500 for the first time this season.
