Night Out: Devil’s Food

I adore Devil’s Food for its treats (mmm, chocolate-drenched mocha cake) and the breakfast and lunch offerings, but now, with dinner service, there’s even more to love.

At the end of March, the South Gaylord Street spot expanded its hours to include supper Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The seasonal bistro menu changes monthly, but on a recent evening I traded spoonfuls of summery, perfectly chilled gazpacho with bites of the warm apricot-goat-cheese galette, a small rustic tart rich with tender fruit and creamy cheese.

Dessert is a must. Offerings include ice cream sandwiches crafted from homemade cookies glued together with Sweet Action Ice Cream‘s addictive salted-butterscotch ice cream. Even better is the strawberry-rhubarb crisp, served in a deep bowl and topped with a scoop of vanilla.

From start to finish, the fresh and simple menu, reasonable prices, and friendly waitstaff at Devil’s Food delivers—and it’s become one of my favorite date-night destinations.

Bonus: Snag a seat on the tucked-away patio.
