The Liberty Leaders, a Revolutionary War-style fife-and-drum duo often seen at conservative rallies in northern Colorado, has disbanded. But the breakup isn’t over creative differences. It’s about politics—specifically, the race for Larimer County sheriff, writes the Fort Collins Coloradoan.

Fife player John Weins supports Carl Bruning, and snare drummer Mel Hilgenberg, who initially backed Bruning, is now behind another Republican candidate, Justin Smith, a major in the sheriff’s office.

“Our relationship, which had just been exceptional, started to deteriorate,” says Hilgenberg, who lives in Fort Collins.

Weins, who owned the revolutionary style clothing the two wore, will debut with a new partner at the Larimer County Fair & Rodeo. And they should have a good showing. The conservative Tea Party movement is as popular as it is divisive. Roughly as many voters in Colorado support the Tea Party as oppose it, according to a Denver Post/9News poll conducted in conjunction with The Greeley Tribune.
