The Denver Broncos rushed for just 89 yards between four people in their season debut this weekend, so it’s not surprising that the team has brought on a new rusher. But their choice—Laurence Maroney, a former first-round draft pick of the New England Patriots—is somewhat odd. Although Maroney was a first-rounder in 2006, The Boston Globe describes him as “oft-confounding” for his lack of ability to realize potential and mentions that he hasn’t played a full season in his four-year career because of injuries. The Patriots didn’t value Maroney very highly, considering they gave him up for a fourth-round pick in the 2011 draft.

The Denver Post reports that Maroney may not contribute right away due to a thigh injury, but his familiarity with coach Josh McDaniels’ offensive scheme should have him in the lineup as soon as he’s healthy.

Meanwhile, legendary former Bronco Shannon Sharpe is leaving his gig as a CBS Sports commentator after being accused of sexual assault. SportsbyBrooks writes that an Atlanta woman was granted a restraining order against Sharpe, saying he forced her to have sex with him, threatened her life, and stalked her. A September 20 hearing will determine whether the allegations have merit, but in the meantime, Sharpe has chosen to “step aside” from his on-air role with CBS.
