The lone goal in last night’s Colorado Rapids MLS World Cup playoffs game against the Columbus Crew was scored by Pablo Mastroeni, the only player left from the team’s 2006 playoff run. And it was enough for a Rapids win on home turf at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. As The Denver Post tells it, the goal came when Omar Cummings passed the ball from the corner to local star Conor Casey right in front of the Crew’s goal. Casey whiffed, the ball continued through his legs, and Mastroeni was there to clean up the play. “I just took a gamble, to be honest,” Mastroeni says. “I saw the play developing, I got on the other side of my man, and made a run for the box. It was just a chance run, and I just buried it.”

Still, the Rapids would have liked to score more than one goal: The two-game, first-round playoff series against the Crew won’t be decided by wins. Instead, Major League Soccer determines the winner based on whichever team scores more goals in the series. That left the otherwise victorious Rapids, the more dominant team throughout the game, somewhat disappointed, Mastroeni tells Goal.com. The next game in this series is November 6 in Columbus.
