In a year that’s looked mostly disappointing for Colorado’s professional sports teams, the Colorado Rapids could be the lone bright spot. The team qualified for the Major League Soccer playoffs over the weekend, putting Colorado in the post season for the first time in four years, points out The Denver Post.

Rapids coach Gary Smith first heard the good news on Saturday before the team took the field against the Los Angeles Galaxy—but he didn’t share it with his players until the game was over. Colorado went down 1-0 early to L.A. but managed to come back and win 3-1 for the team’s first victory after giving up the first goal since 2006, notes ColoradoRapids.com.

“We tried to take away the emotional swing of [knowing they’d already made the playoffs],” Rapids coach Gary Smith tells the Post. “Honestly, it was a fabulous display and hopefully a view of what we are capable of.”

The Rapids may be flying under the radar in Denver, but the run to the playoffs and the comeback win over the Galaxy—one of the best teams in MLS—isn’t going unnoticed around the soccer world. The Rapids’ Omar Cummings earned the Goal.com Player of the Week award, after logging an assist and a goal on Saturday.

The Rapids have one game left in the regular season, taking on Real Salt Lake October 23 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, before preparing for the playoffs, which should start sometime between October 28 and 31.
