Colorado has long enjoyed the reputation of having one of the most active populations in the country, so it’s only fitting that we have our own big-time triathlon, right? If Ironman triathlete Chris Laskey has anything to do with it, Denver will be the host of such an event in the last week of July 2011. Laskey, a Denver native, has tentatively scheduled the inaugural Denver Triathlon for July 24, according to The Denver Post. Next comes ironing out all the logistics, which call for a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike ride, and 10-kilometer run.

Early plans have the swim portion taking place at Sloan’s Lake, which will have to pass EPA standards. The backup plan has swimmers going through Rocky Mountain Lake, just south of I-70 between Federal and Lowell boulevards. Whichever body of water ends up hosting the swimmers, Laskey is hoping to move the cycling event through portions of the Platte River bike path near downtown and eventually end the triathlon at Invesco Field at Mile High.
