Comfort Food: East Side Kosher Deli’s Potato Knish


My first knish came from a New York street vendor. On that blustery day, I stood on a corner, cradling the tinfoil-wrapped bundle, and relishing how the pastry-wrapped mashed potatoes offered immediate comfort. That was more than 20 years ago, but I still remember the introduction.

This week’s subzero temps had me seeking out cozy eats: hot soups, filling pastas, and…knishes. The best local version I’ve found is at the East Side Kosher Deli. Order the carb-heavy treat at the deli counter (choose from potato, mushroom, vegetable, or kasha), pay the $3, go home, and heat it up. The Eastern European specialty still has the power to satisfy on a cold winter’s day.
