Voters in the southern part of war-torn Sudan recently elected to separate from the north, following a period in which two million people lost their lives. DigitalGlobe, a company of private satellite controllers in Longmont, is hoping to help keep Sudan’s leaders accountable, working with human-rights activists from the Washington D.C.-based Enough Project to post timely images of government atrocities at SatSentinel.org. They hope the graphic visuals will pressure leaders into thinking twice before they take violent actions, notes the Denver Post.

“If more people are aware of what is happening, it has a stabilizing impact,” says DigitalGlobe analysis chief Stephen Wood. Actors George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Denver native Don Cheadle pitched in seed money for the project. Should any war crimes be identified, DigitalGlobe would inform the International Criminal Court and United Nations Security Council.
