Amid the news this week that a supermarket is in the works at 20th Street and Chestnut Place, many reports have overlooked the fact that construction has already begun on another grocery store downtown.
Dean’s Urban Market, located in the burgeoning Ballpark neighborhood (see Biker Jim’s Gourmet Dogs Restaurant and iFish Japanese Grill & Sushi Bar), may open as early as July 1. The 12,500-square-foot, family-owned store will feature some of the same products as standard grocers—including Udi’s breads, Maverick Ranch beef, and special dietary offerings (gluten-free, sugar-free)—with comparable pricing to other shops in the metro area.
“There’s a need and an opportunity,” says James Dean, store manager. “The population is moving back [downtown]. We want to cater to those people.”
Dean’s will have a large produce department that, during Colorado’s growing season, will be stocked with local goods. As an independent operator, the store will be committed to custom-ordering products for shoppers by request, says Dean. That includes cakes to-order from an in-house pastry chef.
Dean’s Urban Market will be open daily, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
