The winter storm that swept over parts of the mountains this week dumped just enough snow to put Vail over the coveted 500-inch mark and may help the resort set a record by piling up more than 505 inches. Vail’s average snowfall is in the 350-inch range, but this has been the best year since measurements were first taken at Mid-Vail 10 years ago (Vail Daily). The resort has until Sunday to hit the milestone, but even if the total comes up an inch or two short, the resort has cause for celebration. Its EpicMix application, which allows riders to track their experiences on the slopes and post them to the Internet, has been nominated for two Webby Awards in the Social Handheld Device and Experimental and Innovation categories (Vail Daily).

Ski patrol, law enforcement, and the U.S. Forest Service are hoping the outlook will remain rosy during the traditional season’s-end party on the mountain this weekend. Anyone who’s ever been on the top of chairs 4, 5, and 11 on closing day has seen the potential for the situation to get out of hand—and if you’ve let it happen, you probably also know there are consequences (Vail Daily).
