For more than 50 years, the Cherry Cricket has cranked out tender and greasy (that’s a good thing) burgers. And while the menu offers other goodies (sandwiches, wings, quesadillas), I’ve never strayed from the quarter-pound little cricket burger with cheddar cheese and onions.

But a recent visit converted me to something a little different. A friend mentioned that the Cricket is known for putting peanut butter on its burgers. Being an avid fan of the spread, I figured I’d give it a go. Then the server told me the best way to order the dish was to have it topped with a fried egg and bacon, too. While it seemed like overload, I decided it was worthy a try (minus the bacon).

And boy am I glad I did. The peanut butter, which was slowly melting into the bun, added a salty sweetness to the meat, akin to a marinade. The egg, with flowing yolk, added a necessary touch of familiarity to the dish. Somehow the three distinct flavors melded together for a juicy, messy burger as good as any I’ve had.
