I’ve long been a fan of the House of Commons for afternoon tea or, more often, lunch. But despite my affinity for the scones with Devonshire cream or the Stilton and walnut sandwiches, I only just discovered the spot’s shortbread cookies.

These are simple, beautiful treats—large, buttery, and decorated with either a rivulet of raspberry jam or with dime-size chocolate chips pressed into the surface. Either pairs indulgently with a steaming cup of full-bodied rooibos tea.

The pastry case also offers iced tea cookies (similar to those of Gateaux‘s) and pretty cupcakes. But, I’ll take the shortbreads—specially the raspberry-almond—any day.
