Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. Not the rushed bowl of cereal on the way to the office, but the leisurely meal that allows time to fill waffles’ nooks with maple syrup or to stand over the stove and gently scramble eggs until they’re fluffy and light. When I let someone else do the cooking, one of my first choices is Devil’s Food Bakery & Cookery.

This South Gaylord stalwart’s friendly vibe encourages lingering, which is all-important for an enjoyable morning meal. Coffee is hot and strong, and my go-to dish—the eggs and cornbread—never disappoints. While basically a scramble of two eggs, ham, and fresh green beans, it’s served over a hunk of warm, slightly sweet cornbread. As if that’s not enough, there’s corn salsa on top and thin slices of melted Brie that feel like treasures when you unearth them.

Perhaps best of all, Devil’s Food serves this dish all day long, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Call it breakfast or lunch, just don’t miss it.
