Fans of banh mi must seek out New Saigon Bakery and Deli where Thoa and Thu Nguyen (daughters of the owners of New Saigon Restaurant) are serving up some of the city’s best Vietnamese sandwiches. In fact, the eats are so fresh and flavorful, the sisters are having a hard time keeping up with daily demand. (Tip: Go early.)

Starting with a crispy Vietnamese baguette, the Nguyens add generous layers of fresh cilantro, sliced jalapeño and cucumber, pickled carrot and daikon, and your choice of 15 proteins. Grilled chicken, beef, or veggies are legitimate options, but pork is the real star. Order it grilled, steamed, shredded, minced, cured, or my personal favorite, barbecued. Do not miss the banh mi xa xiu ba roi, stacked with barbecue pork belly.

Pair your sandwich with a papaya-and-beef jerky salad or one of 16 smoothies ranging in flavor from refreshing passion fruit to savory red bean. Add on one of Thoa’s beautiful cakes or pastries (she’s a trained pastry chef) or take home any of the sweets, snacks, coffees, teas, butters, or sauces that line the walls of this lively new spot. Without a doubt, this is an exciting addition to the New Saigon family.
