When you go looking for Martine’s Bake Shop off of Seventh Avenue, you’ll think you’re in the wrong place. You see, the tiny bakery is tucked into the alley behind the building that houses Turin Bicycles and a medical marijuana shop. Find it, and you’ll be rewarded—assuming it’s within business hours (6:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.).

Inside, a single bakers rack displays Martine Chavez’s daily selection of knobby scones and decorated cupcakes, which she calls a cross between a muffin and a cupcake. Her buttery cookies—chocolate chunk, oatmeal, creamy peanut butter—sit near the cash register. There’s also brewed coffee and breakfast burritos, and that’s it. Prices are more than reasonable (I picked up a scone, a coffee, and four cookies for $5.25).

Chat for a few, grab a scone (all are huge and some, like the chocolate cheesecake, are more dessert than breakfast) and a cup of coffee, and slip out the door.
