Park Hill, with its leafy streets and historic brick homes, is one of the most charming neighborhoods in the city, but it suffers from a lack of high-quality restaurants. Happily, last fall, Pary’s on 28th opened to fill some of the void. The tiny, casual spot resides in the space formerly occupied by Satchel’s (which relocated to Sixth Avenue).
Pary’s spring menu is satisfying and affordable: Expect dishes such as pork schnitzel for $14, penne pasta for $12, seared scallops for $19. The price range (entrées top out at $19) and the neighborhood location were enough to lure me in; the food itself will keep me coming back.
Last week, I tried two dishes, the ropa vieja—shredded flank steak braised with sweet strips of red bell pepper, onion, and tomato, and served with cuminy black beans and white rice—and the spicy and tender Jerk chicken, blackened with Jamaican spices and accompanied by yellow rice. Both plates were hearty enough to provide lunchtime leftovers the next day.
Now, I can hardly wait for warm summer evenings when Pary’s will raise its garage-door-style window for al fresco dining throughout.
