Date Night: Dinner in Pizzeria Da Lupo’s Vintage Volkswagen Van

|

Half the fun of date night is mixing up the format from time to time, be it a sunset picnic in the park, dinner and a movie, or a quick out-of-town getaway. Now you can add Pizzeria da Lupo‘s Dinner for Two to that list.

The Boulder restaurant recently refabbed a vintage 1969 Volkswagen van with the sole purpose of staging dinners at a location of your choice. This could mean at a spot overlooking Boulder Creek, or perched on top of Flagstaff, or even in your driveway with the baby monitor at arm’s reach.

It works like this: You arrive at Pizzeria da Lupo on Arapahoe Avenue, have a glass of wine, and watch as executive chef Ashlea Tolbeck prepares your meal. Then, you’re whisked away to your chosen location. In my case, Tolbeck and her driver delivered my boyfriend and me to Chautauqua Park. While we took a stroll, they set up dinner on the van’s built-in picnic table. We returned to music by Frank Sinatra, twinkling candles, and flowers on the table.

We dined on an antipasti meat and cheese board and a Brussels sprout salad tossed with Pecorino and walnuts. Just as the Saliche pizza with fennel sausage, ricotta, and rapini was about to be served, we watched as three deer wandered nearby. We finished with dessert wine and a decedent honey-ricotta cheesecake—and we toasted to an unforgettable evening.

The details: Dinner for Two costs $44, plus $20 per hour for van rental (tax and gratuity not included). You design your own menu and pick a location within 10 miles of Boulder proper. Call to make reservations or learn more on their Facebook page. You can also enter to win a date night now through August 31.
