Dresses and skirts have been on women’s fashion radars in a big way for the last few seasons, as they provide easy wardrobe solutions for any day of the week. But if you’re a fashion-forward girl, get ready to rethink your closet this fall, as pants become the new “It” item. On the runways, designers showed everything from skinnies (leather at Ann Demeulemeester) to draped numbers (cut in velvet at Balmain) and even suited-up versions (at Prada and Chanel). With so many pants to choose from this season, here’s a mini cheat sheet on the best cuts to invest in now:

The cropped flare—like a tartan version by McQ Alexander McQueen (pictured, above)is the hottest length this season, and perfect for showing off statement shoes. Because of the pant shape, you’ll need to think about your top half to make the proportion work. I like a shorter length with this style, like a cropped sweater, a fitted jacket that stops at the top of the hip, or a tucked-in blouse.

Equestrian influences are another major runway trend (as seen at Givenchy), and the jodhpur is reemerging in a big way. Mason’s version (pictured, right) is an update on the classic with button detail at the hem. Regardless of whether you pick these up in black or khaki, play up the English countryside feel with either a fitted jacket (in a menswear plaid or tweed) or a chunky cashmere sweater.

Denim is always an easy wear, but this is the season to kick it up a notch. If you’re looking for new jeans, go for a pair with a little something extra, like those with a side-slit detail by MOTHER. In a season where boots are a major must-have, the Slasher Straight V (pictured, left) lets yours be seen, plus the style elongates the legs.
