Despite being Colorado-born and raised, I have a thing for southern food—and especially fried green tomatoes. I got my latest fix at the two-month-old Jezebel’s Southern Bistro + Bar in LoHi.

Chef and co-owner Scott Durrah‘s riff on the caprese salad includes—you guessed it—fried green tomatoes. Thinly sliced tomatoes are densely coated with cornmeal batter and pan-fried. They’re plated with slices of creamy mozzarella, a sprinkle of chopped basil, and red pepper jam. The jam is a smart substitution for the usual balsamic vinegar, as its sweetness helps balance the tartness of the unripe tomatoes. The dish, which lands on both the lunch and dinner menus, lends itself to a light mid-day meal or a shared appetizer.

More to Love: In my hunt for all things fried, green, and tomato-y, I’ve got my eye on Sassafras American Eatery’s fried green tomato sandwich (featured on our website last month), Trattoria Stella’s green tomato appetizer on the Colfax location’s Denver Restaurant Week menu, and the fried green tomato steamed bun from LoHi noodle bar Uncle.
