Why we love it: The chance to view nature from the saddle.

When to go: Trail rides are only offered in the summer (until October 1), but the stable reopens after Thanksgiving for sleigh rides during winter.

If you’re a skier or snowboarder, you’re probably familiar with the Breckenridge slopes. But, in summer, the would-be ski runs are a stark contrast—open, lush fields and gradient hills—and create a quiet, open space fit for a leisurely ride.

Breckenridge Stables is located at the base of Peak 9, which is where the ride begins. The trail commences with a splash through a small stream and follows a hiking trail, tightly cushioned by trees and shrubbery, through the area. The winding path goes slowly up-up-up, and at the highest point of the ride, we were near the top of Peak 9—a fact that my friend, who snowboarded down it last winter found hard to believe (“It looks so different!”). It’s a picturesque spot to snap photos of the green slopes and blue skies.

The stables typically offer trail rides every hour (make a reservation in advance) that last an hour-and-a-half. They accommodate all riding levels, including small children, so parents and beginners should feel good about their equestrian-pairing by the time they’re in the saddle.

Fuel Up: Sitting in the saddle is more physically taxing than it looks; stop by Twist for a hardy meal afterward. (You can find more 5280 Breckenridge dining suggestions here.)

Tip: As with any horse-involved venture, wear tennis shoes or hard-toed boots and jeans.

Getting there: Travel east on I-70. Take exit 203 for CO-9 South, toward Breckenridge. Continue on the 9 south until you reach Village Road. Turn right. You’ll see a sign on the left that points you to a parking lot. On the other side of the lot, there is the beginning of a mile-long dirt road that will lead you straight to the stables.
