The Destination: Ska Brewing in Durango

The Odometer: 332 miles from Denver

Why it’s Worth the Gas Money: At first glance, this brewery seems stuck in a 1990s ska music video. It is an image the brewery cultivates, what with the cartoon-book website, label design, and T-shirts. But don’t let the time warp fool you: This brewery serves up some of the best suds in Colorado. (Many brewers that we interview fess up to loving Ska’s brews.) In the taproom, you’ll get the same retro vibe, but the brews are decidedly forward-focused. Here’s your chance to sample wet hop twists, trendy black IPAs, and more. Can’t decide? We’d turn to our fellow customers for a tip. While the servers are extremely knowledgeable, the locals crowd seated at the bar knows the list just as well.

Trivia: While Oskar Blues Brewery was first to put out craft canned beer, Ska was close behind (think: weeks, not years).

Who’s Sitting Next to You: A Durango local.

What You’re Drinking: You can’t go wrong by ordering a Modus Hoperandi (6.8 percent ABV) on tap. Yes, you can get it all over Denver, but much like drinking Guinness in Ireland, there’s just something different when you’re that close to the brew house.

The Details: 225 Girard St., Durango, 970-247-5792

As with any brewery visit, we recommend that you sip, savor, and stash a growler in the trunk so that you can enjoy the brews responsibly at home.
