Trend Alert: Radiant Orchid, Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year

By |

Given the recent ridiculously low temps, we were warmed at Pantone’s Wednesday announcement of a rosy, energetic shade for 2014’s color of the year: Radiant Orchid, which Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®, describes as “an enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple, and pink undertones.”

Pantone’s color gurus draw influences for each year’s signature hue from across the world and across cultural sectors—films, art exhibits, popular travel destinations, technology, sporting events, and even socio-economic conditions can play a role in determining the color.

“While the 2013 color of the year, PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal, and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination,” says Eiseman. “An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.”

For interiors, Pantone recommends using Radiant Orchid in paint, accent pieces, and accessories; try the versatile shade with olive and deeper hunter greens, turquoise, teal, and light yellows. Not feeling so bold? Liven up your neutral spaces (gray, beige, taupe) with a pop of the color.

We braved the elements to pop into a few of our favorite Larimer Square shopping spots to find out who’s ahead of the trend. We may have been a little liberal with our interpretation of the pink-purple shade, but these accessories are still sure to get your home ready for the new year.
