A Colorado firm that specializes in satellite imagery is at the front of a global crowdsourcing movement to help locate a Malaysian aircraft that has been missing for nearly a week.

DigitalGlobe, of Longmont, trained five satellites on the Gulf of Thailand area where Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 last appeared on radar. The plane, carrying 239 passengers, disappeared en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur. Officials on Wednesday expanded the search area to 27,000 square miles.

DigitalGlobe’s online crowdsourcing program had more than 500,000 unique visitors early this week when it launched the effort, the Denver Post reports, as people from around the world worked to find possible traces of a downed aircraft. The company’s servers eventually crashed but were rebooted Tuesday evening. At one point, the company was getting 100,000 online visits per hour.
