Greek salad may be one of the Mediterranean nation’s most famous exports, but—really—what is Greek food without tender souvlaki, fresh shavings of gyro meat, and flavorful moussaka? I was about to find out at Greek To Me, a small Tech Center strip-mall spot opened by Greece native Dino Seitanis in 2012.

As a recent convert to vegetarianism, I was a little nervous; Dino’s brother, Dimitris, however, immediately set my mind at ease. He pointed out a handful of meat-free items: spanakopita (spinach and cheese pie), Greek fries (topped with olive oil, feta, and herbs), and saganaki (flaming Greek cheese). I started with the tirokafteri, a spicy and salty feta cheese dip served with toasted pita bread. Next came, yes, the Greek salad. This crisp tumble of lettuce and cucumbers, bright red tomatoes, tangy pepperoncinis, and kalamata olives was lightly dressed in a vinaigrette with—the best part—two generous hunks of fresh feta. Because I had declined meat atop the dish, Dimitris generously added four (instead of the ordinary two) plump stuffed grape leaves (dolmades) at no extra charge. All that, plus another plate of toasted pita, made for a light, but filling, meal.

I dined solo but watched as nearby patrons happily dug into nonvegetarian options, including a generous wedge of pastitsio—Greek-style lasagna made with ground beef and vegetables—and a pork souvlaki sandwich with marinated and grilled meat. Before paying, I made sure to try the house-made baklava. Fortunately, the golden stack of honey-drenched filo and walnuts wasn’t off-limits for vegetarians. 9251 E.
