Colorado’s legions of skateboarders have a new venue to practice heelflips without worrying about sliding on snow-covered ramps. In June, Skatuary Skatepark and Youth Center opened in Sheridan as the only indoor skate park in the metro area. At the 20,000-square-foot facility, skaters can practice their skills (on their own or during Saturday clinics), relax in the cafe and game room, or just chill during a concert (bands perform weekly). But manager Aaron Dietzen says he’s most proud of the 70 to 80 at-risk youth who voluntarily stop by every Friday night carrying Bibles and skateboards for nondenominational Skate Church, a weekly affair organized by SkateMinistry, a Colorado-based nonprofit that operates out of the venue. “Sitting in pews on Sunday is not for everyone,” Dietzen says. “We give kids—kids on the fringe who might realistically be getting into drugs or causing trouble—a chance to hear about church in a nontraditional way.” Here, it seems, the Gospels and grinds go hand in hand. skatuary.com
