April Norris was tired of getting up at 2 a.m. When she started as an anchor for ABC24 in Memphis seven years earlier, she loved her job. But soon after, it just became a daily slog to boost the station’s profits. Working out had always been Norris’ salvation—especially the barre classes that combine dance and Pilates elements to give a full-body workout.

So, after quitting her job and moving to Denver in December 2013, the 39-year-old opened the first Colorado location of Xtend Barre in Highlands Ranch. The mission of the two-month-old studio, which offers kickboxing and yoga in addition to barre, is to be a place of “friendship, challenge, and change.” To that effect, Norris and Xtend Barre are holding Plié for Pink Barre Camp, a series of 75-minute, donation-based classes that benefit the Young Survival Coalition (a nonprofit that promotes breast cancer awareness in women under 40). “We’re starting to tell the girls, ‘If there’s something you hold near or dear to your heart, tell us,’’ Norris says. “We want to challenge them to change their bodies but also to help out the community.”

Along with the workout ($25 on Saturday, October 18 at 11 a.m. or Sunday, October 19 at 12:15 p.m.), attendees can enjoy rubdowns from Elements Massage and B12 shots from Physicians Weight Loss ($29, all of which will also go to the Young Survival Coalition). Plus, two Denver Broncos cheerleaders will be on site Saturday to sign posters—and sweat along with everyone else. 3620 E.
