Once you’ve figured out where you’re going to spend the last hours of 2014 (see our roundup of party spots), you may consider what you’re going to change in the new year. One of the easiest resolutions involves becoming more environmentally friendly, a step that Coloradans, surprisingly, still need to prioritize.

One of the go-green tips in December’s special environment issue was to replace potentially toxic cleaning chemicals like furniture polish with more natural substances, such as half a cup of white wine vinegar and a teaspoon of olive oil. To kickstart your squeaky clean 2015, here are five more substitutes for your typical cleaning products:

Silverware: Use salt instead of silver polish to shine your stained utensils.

Bathroom mold: Combine one part hydrogen peroxide with two parts water to spray on shower mold.

Cutting board residue: Squeeze lemon juice onto wooden cutting boards and rub to get rid of food stains.

Oven grime: Spray your oven down with water and then add about 1/4 inch of baking soda to the bottom for several hours to remove grime.

Clothing stains: Rub white chalk onto greasy clothing stains before throwing the laundry in the wash.
