I have a new favorite hangout: the Corner Beet, a sun-flooded vegetarian cafe at the intersection of 14th Avenue and Ogden Street. The spot, which serves fresh-pressed juices, Copper Door Coffee, and a small daytime menu, is an outgrowth of Gypsy Juice. In addition to the rotating selection of terrifically fresh, raw juices (I especially love the veggie-packed Bon Vivant and the carrot and turmeric–rich Galbi), owners Nikki Hazamy and Donna Dempsey dish sandwiches, soup (try the Mediterranean lentil), and salads.

The best part of the menu, though, is the toast section. By now you probably know that the country has gone crazy over toast (see this, this, and this). The Corner Beet is on trend with combos like garlic toast with hard-boiled egg and greens; and ciabatta with house-made pumpkin butter. My favorite of the toppings is the beet butter (pictured). This spread is an ingenious blend of beets, butter, and honey. It’s savory and earthy, decadent and homey. The cafe spreads it thickly onto toasty ciabatta for a combination that’s so vibrant and mystifyingly delicious I can’t stop thinking about it.
