Boldly Moving Forward

A letter from the editor of 5280 Home’s Spring 2015 edition.

By |

In its 21-year history in Denver, our parent publication, 5280, has enjoyed covering many buzz-worthy architecture and design projects in Colorado. What we came to realize a few years ago was that there were just too many great stories to tell—so many, in fact, that we decided they warranted their own magazine.

I can’t help but feel this latest issue of 5280 Home illustrates how progressive Denver design has become in recent years. From a needle-moving point of view, look no further than the new apartment building Lumina, which we preview on page 30 (“Natural Order”). Designed by architects at Denver’s Tres Birds Workshop, the property is a stunner from the street thanks to its intricately carved metal screens. In “Daring By Design,” page 64, we profile a house decorated by Iba Design Associates’ Erin Iba, who brings to Denver a strikingly urban and audacious design sense cultivated during her years in New York City. (Exhibit A: a ceiling painted orange. Need I say more?) And in “Re-Style,” page 50, we tour the burrito factory turned home of Danny Newman (founder of downtown’s annual Zombie Crawl and an emerging-art collector) in west Denver’s “undiscovered” Barnum neighborhood.

I hope this issue will inspire you, too, to get excited about our city’s exhilarating design scene this spring. Start with some of the Mile High City’s most iconic buildings during Doors Open Denver (see “Save The Date,” page 44), which will be headquartered at the newly renovated Union Station building in LoDo. Get out there; there’s so much to explore!
