The final 1,737-mile journey for an eight-by-eight-by-40-foot shipping container starts at Louisville’s Monarch High School. This month, the container, now transformed into a furnished medical and dental clinic, will make its way to Mexico City, where it will serve some of the more than 40,000 Los Reyes La Paz residents who don’t have access to health services. Over the past year, about 50 Monarch students volunteered their specialties—from architecture to art to robotics design—to create the $30,000 facility under the guidance of Louisville’s Homes of Living Hope nonprofit. Once the clinic is installed, local medical and dental students will practice out of the two exam rooms and a shared office space and pharmacy. “It gives students real-world applications in building projects,” Homes of Living Hope director Bart Wear says.
