The waning days of summer are upon us. Sigh. If you’re not quite ready to give up those remaining warm-weather evenings, make plans to take in the earlier sunset from the top of the Cyclone Coaster at Lakeside Amusement Park during Summer Scream 5 on Thursday, September 3.

The annual shindig, hosted by Reel Social Club, is a fundraiser for the Denver Film Society (DFS). Between the open bar, DJ-ed music, unlimited rides, and general merriment, Summer Scream has attracted a lot of attendees over the years, raising more than $100,000. “It’s a unique opportunity to have a crazy night at Lakeside when it’s not open to the public,” says Reel Social Club co-founder Katie Shapiro.

Reel Social Club launched in 2010 as the official young patrons’ group of DFS. The mission: cultivate new members and an expanded audience for DFS. “A lot of nonprofits’ high-level patrons are from that older demographic,” Shapiro says. “We want to make involvement accessible for people, for young professionals.” Which is why membership is just $80 per year. Entrée into the group—which comprises about 200 people—includes monthly screenings, free admission to the Summer Scream anniversary bash, special parties during the Denver Film Festival in November, and discounts to other DFS-related events.

One tip before you walk into Summer Scream: Roller coasters and too many beers do not make a good pair.

Summer Scream 5 will be held from 6–11 p.m. on Thursday, September 3. Lakeside Amusement Park is located at 4601 Sheridan Blvd. Tickets (free for Reel Social Club members) are $40 and go up $5 at the door.
