With its tucked-away location in the Cory-Merrill neighborhood, you’d likely never happen upon the demure Sweet As Pie. And that would be a shame because you’d miss out on owner Christe Chen’s classic American bakeshop fare. The display window is usually stocked with seasonal pies and plenty of the Southern favorites Chen grew up with in Memphis, Tennessee, including buttermilk pie and hummingbird cupcakes. I keep returning, however, for Chen’s tight-crumbed, buttery scones. Her creations bear no resemblance to the rock-hard blocks that show up in other pastry cases. Instead, you’ll find pillowy yet crisp blueberry, maple, or even savory smoked salmon, dill, and cream cheese scones. But if Chen happens to be featuring her bacon and chocolate chunk version, be sure to get more than one.
