Jeff Cornelius and Betty, the smoker.

Coming Soon: Globe Hall

|

The best way to get to know Globe Hall, Jeff Cornelius‘ pending Texas-style barbecue and live-music hall, is to meet Betty. She’s the 6,000-pound smoker that sits out back. “The universe wanted this to happen. I’ve been very lucky,” Cornelius says. He found Betty, a brand-new, top-of-the-line J&R Manufacturing smoker, on eBay. He drove to Salt Lake City to pick her up, and had her craned into place behind the former Sidewinder Tavern in Globeville—that’s where, sometime this fall, Cornelius will open Globe Hall.

For barbecue lovers, Betty will be your best friend. She can hold 1,800 pounds of meat per cook and she’s only powered by wood, so the brisket, ribs, pork, sausage links, and chicken she yields will be deliciously smoky. A Texas native, Cornelius is channeling his love of barbecue. “In Texas you’ll have a punk guy, a frat guy, a business man, and a suburban family all there,” he says. “Good barbecue is the common denominator.” That’s what he wants to create with Globe Hall.

Cornelius is making use of two adjoining buildings: One from the late-1890s (originally a saloon) and one from 1903 (built to house St. Jacob’s Lodge Hall, a Croatian and Slovenian Fraternal Society). The bar and barbecue sit on the saloon side and the music hall is located on the St. Jacob’s side—the two are joined by a doorway. Look for Globe Hall to serve barbecue until it runs out Wednesday through Saturday nights, with live music Friday and Saturday nights. We can’t wait to see what Betty can do.

Bonus: Banana pudding and Banoffee pie fans, get ready. Globe Hall has morphed the iconic desserts into one. Expect single serving treats layered with graham cracker crust, dark chocolate, dulce de leche, bananas, and whipped cream.
