Best Bites: Avanti’s Poco Torteria

Line up for the massively flavorful sandwiches at Avanti’s Poco Torteria.

When it comes to the sandwich, three-month-old Avanti Food & Beverage serves a virtual world tour. The LoHi food hall offers everything from shawarma to arepas, but our favorite is a hearty griddled torta from Poco Torteria. When chef-owner Kevin Morrison (of Pinche Tacos) set out to master the Mexican street food, he sampled iterations from all over the country—and then added a personal spin. For the perfect introduction, order the $12 OG T (pictured), an intimidatingly large stack of grilled sirloin, melted Jack cheese, shredded iceberg, tomato, and smashed avocado, all embellished with a spicy and sweet guajillo chile–honey mayo. Morrison will top your torta with frijoles colados (a pinto bean purée) upon request. The meal may be messy, but it’s well worth the extra napkins.
