For almost 40 years, Marilyn Minter has pushed boundaries. The Louisiana native began her artistic pursuits by taking stark, mostly black-and-white photos of her mother, who suffered from drug addiction. But Minter’s career took flight after she moved to New York City and began exploring the intersections of pop culture, sexuality, and feminism via both photography and painting.

Her latest exhibit, Pretty/Dirty, opens this Friday at MCA Denver and will be on display through January 31, 2016. The installation is something of a coup for one of Denver’s most exciting, innovative, and increasingly influential museums. Minter’s work has been shown all over the world, spurring passionate debates and commentary among critics and fans alike.

Pretty/Dirty is a retrospective that showcases Minter’s early photographs alongside her paintings, for which she used a distinctive graphic style to create colors and textures that are somehow both bright and unsettling, beautiful and grotesque.

The 21-and-over opening night reception takes place Friday from 8p.m. to midnight and features drinks, appetizers, a preview of the exhibit, among DJs, drag queens, models, and “other weirdness.” Guests are invited to “Dress up. Party. [And] Get Glamorous,” so grab your tickets here and don’t be afraid to show up as the glitziest version of yourself.
