Upslope to Unveil Oktoberfest Lager in the Backcountry

Free beer! But, there's a 2.3-mile-long string attached.

The air outside is finally tinged with the crisp feel of fall, and there is possibly no better place to celebrate than in the Centennial State, where the alpine views and fall colors are almost as attractive as the sparkly taste of a freshly tapped craft brew on your lips.

Fortunately, the season for Oktoberfest lagers has arrived, and in the spirit of adventure, Upslope Brewing Company has decided to add a unique twist to the release of its newest variety. Instead of tapping the brew on site, the team is hiking up into the mountains near Winter Park to open its first-ever backcountry tap room at the High Lonesome Hut this Saturday, offering a free taste to anyone who makes the 2.3-mile journey.

“It’s been an idea since early this spring,” says Katie Hill, Upslope’s marketing manager. “We wanted to do something out of the box, but within the style of Upslope.” And speaking of Upslope’s style, it’s rad. The brewery is one of several in Colorado that have done away with bottling beer, preferring to stick to cans, which are better for the environment, better for the beer, and more convenient for adventures. “Our beer in a can is really perfect as a reward for anything you do, outdoors or in,” says Hill.

A free 19.2-ounce can of Oktoberfest (plus two more signature cans of your choice) certainly seems like a just reward for a leisurely fall hike in the mountains, but if that wasn’t enough to lure you in, there will also be games, grilling, and the chance to explore, fish the nearby creeks, and participate in any number of outdoor shenanigans. “We’re counting on this to be an organic get together—the more people the better,” says Hill. “The idea of a pop-up taproom in the middle of the woods in a beautiful meadow setting has attracted us for awhile, so we are really excited to see how it goes.“

So bring your beer-loving friends, your furry ones, your family, your ex-boyfriend, whoever, and celebrate adventuring with a cold brew from Upslope. Oh, and don’t forget your ID. Even in the mountains, rules are rules.

Join the fun: Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., High Lonesome Hut, Winter Park; free
