Turns out the “Mile High City” moniker isn’t just referring to our particularly high elevation.

A new study by QualityHealth, a health information website, names Denver the nation’s “copulation capital.” Taking into account contraceptive sales, statewide birth and fertility rates, sales of books about sex, and sales from several nationwide erotica outlets, Denver topped the list of the most sexually active cities in the country.

One of the key reasons for the high ranking: Contraceptive sales within the city are 189 percent higher than the national average, and sales of female contraceptives specifically are 278 percent higher.

Portland, Oregon; Ann Arbor, Michigan; San Antonio, Texas; and Boise, Idaho, rounded out the top five. Jacksonville, Florida, earned the title of “least lustful” city. And the researchers really know how to hit a town when its down, describing the southern city as “more subdued than steamy.”

While this distinction is far from scientific, you can consider this perfect fodder (in appropriate company, of course) for tonight’s happy hour conversations.

Interested in learning more? The full study is fairly short and can be found here. If nothing else, the read is quite compelling. (Phrases like “hotbeds for love-making” and “making the most whoopee” make appearances. Really.)
