NSFW: Dan Savage’s HUMP! Lands in Denver

The renowned LGBTQ activist and writer takes his regular-people erotic film festival on the road.

In a world where the lines between sexuality, art, and everyday culture could hardly be more blurred, Dan Savage is all about embracing the new.

The fiercely intelligent, witty, and outspoken writer—his “Savage Love” sex advice column is globally syndicated—has branched out into film in recent years by creating the annual HUMP! film festival, a celebration of erotic filmmaking by and for “normal” people of every sexual persuasion and proclivity.

HUMP! arrives in Denver for two nights this weekend at the Oriental Theater, the second year Savage has toured with it outside his home in the Pacific Northwest. It features a collection of short films—typically no more than a few minutes each—submitted by Savage’s followers and fans and curated by him. Savage’s only rule is, there are no rules, so attendees should plan on being shocked and awed by what they see, if not inspired.

The festival is but one component in Savage’s fervent commitment to sex-positivity and his career-long quest to eliminate shame from our sexual conversations and activities. (He’s also a co-creator of the highly influential “It Gets Better” campaign against anti-LGBTQ bullying and discrimination.)

Past attendees of HUMP!—even those who consider themselves to be sexually progressive—have come away amazed at what they’ve seen (WARNING: headphones), and while these films certainly aren’t for everyone, they are for anyone who’s interested in pushing past traditional American puritanical attiudes about sex and sexuality. If you’re interested in seeing what else is out there in the world of eroticism, a good night of HUMP!-ing might be just what you need.

The festival runs twice on Friday and three times on Saturday. For tickets and more information, click here.
