The Madeline Hotel and Residences in Telluride’s Mountain Village is unveiling a $15 million renovation this winter, which might not seem like surprising news. After all, hotels undergo updates all the time. In this past year alone, Denver’s Ritz-Carlton, Magnolia, and Brown Palace hotels all mounted major makeovers. The Madeline, meanwhile, is just six years old. So why the refresh?

Far from shabby, the four-diamond hotel has been a fab getaway since it opened as Capella in 2009. Since then, it’s bounced between various owners, and Swedish management changed the name to Madeline. In August 2014, the Northview Hotel Group became the property’s latest captain, and the company aspires to do more than stay the course. It intends to turn the Madeline Hotel and Residences into Telluride’s crown jewel.

The $15 million in upgrades are expected to take the property from great to extraordinary. In August, the Madeline opened the M Salon, which caters to summertime wedding parties and winter’s ski-boot-battered feet. What used to be REV Restaurant is no longer offering fine dining; instead, the renovated dining room (now called the M Club) has become more of a gastropub and pool hall, serving gourmet tater tots and featuring an indoor/outdoor bar. Scheduled for completion this December, an outdoor swimming pool (built atop the hotel’s new porte-cochère entryway) will also exploit the Madeline’s scenic, base-area location.

All the residences (ranging from studios to four-bedroom suites) have received full remodels with sumptuous bathrooms—the Madeline’s signature amenity. And this winter, the hotel will take over the operation of the Mountain Village ice rink, so skaters can flow seamlessly between the ice and the Madeline’s rinkside fire tables. But here’s a cautionary heads-up to parents: The rinkside Dylan’s Candy Bar (which opened in the Madeline this summer) is just as irresistible as the famous New York store, run by designer Ralph Lauren’s daughter, Dylan.

It’s just one of many ways that the Madeline’s renovation promises to be oh-so sweet.
