The Japanese art of anime has been gaining popularity in America since Pikachu poked his adorable head out in the ’90s. (Remember Pokémon?) Lately that fandom has translated into massive conventions. The lines at Nan Desu Kan, Denver’s largest anime convention, have gotten so long Broad Horizons Events decided to launch a “baby con”: the Colorado Anime Fest. The cozier gathering, February 12 to 14 at the Renaissance Denver Stapleton Hotel, will sell no more than 1,500 tickets ($45 to $50; $125 for VIP) while still bringing a big-name lineup that includes Christopher R. Sabat, the voice of several characters on Dragon Ball Z, a long-running anime TV series. Plus, attendees will find an anime-themed bar—because nothing goes better with cartoons than a stiff drink.
