The Doctor, Frodo Baggins, and Hermione Granger walk into a bar. It could be the start of a bad joke, or it could just be Friday night at Dungeons & Drafts.

This Fort Collins tavern, which opened last summer after its owners met their nearly $10,000 Kickstarter goal in less than seven hours, is an escape from reality in more ways than one. Thanks to the incentive of a 10 percent discount, patrons in costumes are not uncommon, and the space is designed to resemble a medieval beer hall, complete with silver flagons and a corner suit of armor. But the true escapist pull for gamers is, of course, the game library. More than 100 board games and three tabletop RPGs (role-playing games) await your eager party of adventurers. Taking part in a raucous fantasy land-grab with friends is as easy as checking out Terra Mystica for the evening.

When you get thirsty during your two-hour game of Monopoly: Star Trek Klingon Edition, quench your thirst with a tankard of mead or a pint of the Master Thief, a German porter from the Grimm Brothers Brewhouse. For something a little stronger, turn to one of Dungeons & Drafts’ cleverly named cocktails. Many of the drinks are quite sweet, but the Moriar-tea (a blend of Earl Grey, gin, agave nectar, and lemon) is a nice complement to a long night of conquering.
