Nearly 30 years ago, a garden shop called Birdsall & Co. moved into Antique Row with a unique selection of garden decor, patio furniture, planting containers, and more. In the time since, it’s become a Denver institution with a loyal following. The store has gone through changes before—Annie Huston took over Birdsall & Co. with her husband, Scott, in 2012—but this October, a relocation down the road to a newly renovated space at 2870 S. Broadway may be Birdsall’s biggest test yet.

Fans of the original, however, need not fret; Annie assured us that this new location is all about revealing a fresh-faced, more functional version of the Birdsall we’ve come to adore. Here’s what we’re excited about (and we think you will be, too).

1. A Bigger, Better Inventory

While its current location is just about overflowing with product, Birdsall & Co.’s new store will provide plenty of real estate for new finds. “Over the past four years we’ve owned it, we’ve greatly expanded the collections, the lines, and the inventory that we carry to answer the need for new things. We now have custom-made pieces—like containers, pots, and fountains,” Annie says. “But when you do that, you have to order big quantities.” An attached warehouse will hold all of the backstock and provide more space for picking up and dropping off larger pieces.

2. Inspiration Station

Stuck on ways to freshen up your patio? Annie says the new location will be a one-stop shop for outdoor inspiration, whether you’re looking for new furniture or some unique touches for your garden. “We will have more room inside to create vignettes for customers, which we could not do [at the old location],” Annie says. “When they come in, they will see what they can do with our products to decorate their own spaces.”

3. Year-Round Planning

Garden shopping is no longer a seasonal hobby: Outdoor inventory like fountains and planters will be displayed indoors during the winter, which means you can start preparing long before the snow has melted. “In the winter, when there’s snow out in the courtyard, nobody wants to come and look at a fountain,” Annie says. “So [at the new store], everything will be inside during the winter months.” They’ll even have an expanded selection of fresh Christmas trees, wreaths, and garlands—plus an array of ornaments—during the holiday season.

4. Community Ties

The beloved garden shop may be leaving Antique Row, but it’s not going too far. The new store is just 13 blocks south on South Broadway, which means local fans still won’t have to leave the neighborhood. “It was very important for us not to completely shock our customer base, so staying on the South Broadway corridor was really important,” Annie says. Plus, the added square footage will make it easier for the shop to offer up its space for community events and local organizations.

5. Pre-Moving Discounts!

To prepare for the big move, Birdsall is doing something almost unheard of: having a sale in August. Through the end of the month, all of the pieces in the courtyard, including Birdsall’s signature oversize fountains and pots, will be 20 to 50 percent off, and outdoor furniture—including the popular Barlow Tyrie line—will be discounted 20 to 30 percent. The best part? Some of the on-sale inventory is new this season. “We are still getting shipments in, so the sale is not just on what we have,” Annie says. “It is also on new pieces. We have some brand-new fountains that are on sale now. It’s an incredible deal.”

Birdsall & Co.’s new location is slated to open at 2870 S. Broadway on October 1.
