If you’re still buying pre-shredded cheese from the supermarket, stop. Please. (This is especially true after an FDA investigation revealed that much of that “cheese” may very well be wood pulp.) Thanks to a multitude of specialty cheese shops—some new, some old—Front Rangers have more places to shop for fromage than ever before.

If You Love Old World Charm:

Shop at: The Truffle Cheese Shop for a tightly curated, seasonally changing selection (everything from Larkspur’s Fruition Farms’ sheep’s milk ricotta [1] to the delicate Spanish buffalo milk Oriol de Montbrú). Expect a wait; this 15-year-old store has a devoted following.

Don’t leave without Rodolphe’s Beurre de Barette, a hand-churned butter from Normandy.

2906 E. Sixth Ave., 303-322-7363

If You Like Things Made In The Good Ol’ USA

Shop at: Cheese & Provisions, where the owner was once a cheese maker himself. His extensive experience gives you access to hard-to-find domestic artisan cheeses, such as Parish Hill Creamery’s seasonal Suffolk Punch [2].

Don’t leave without the sandwich of the day, stuffed with the likes of goat Gouda, green chile spread, and salami cotto.

2432 W. 44th Ave., 303-455-2221

If You Live In Boulder But Still Eat Dairy

Shop at: One of Cured Boulder’s two outposts (located less than a mile from each other) for epicurean goods like a wedge of Avalanche Cheese Co.’s local Cabra-Blanca [3] or thinly shaved Jamón Ibérico from Spain.

Don’t leave without: One of the picnic packages, a compilation of cheeses and other goodies packaged for outdoor adventures.

1825 Pearl St. and 2019 10th St., Boulder, 720-389-8096

If You Are A Dedicated Francophile

Shop at: Cheese Importers in Longmont for a charming gourmet market, French-inspired bistro, and belle epoque absinthe bar. But it’s the massive walk-in refrigerated cave of almost 400 cheeses (organized by country) that keeps us coming back again and again…and again.

Don’t leave without: A nice wedge of Brilliat Savarin [5], a triple-crème Brie.

103 Main St., Longmont, 303-772-9599
