It’s no secret that veterans face a unique set of challenges when they come home, especially after serving abroad. But organizations such as The Mission Continues hope to help ease that transition for post-9/11 veterans.

On Saturday, The Mission Continues’ two Denver Service Platoons will answer a different call of duty by helping to improve the Tennyson Center for Children, which provides residential and therapeutic support, as well as K-12 schooling for children in the Mile High City who have suffered from abuse, neglect, or have mental health or development issues. The platoons will partner with Tennyson Center staffers and volunteers to create murals and revitalize the outdoor play area, among other improvements.

Sarah Jones of The Mission Continues says events such as this one provide a sense of community for everyone involved. Veterans get to be part of a collective group of individuals they can relate with, and the kids see that there’s a dedicated group of servicemen and servicewomen who care about them. “We all want to feel like there’s a community for us,” Jones says.

Veterans and non-veterans alike who would like to get involved can do so through the sign-up page on The Mission Continues’ website. The event begins at 12:30 p.m. and will run until 5 p.m.
