Hot Property: A Wash Park Home Built for Rock ’n’ Roll Royalty

The Big Easy-inspired modern house built for the Fray’s lead guitarist is on the market for $4.05 million.

Wash Park joggers, stroller-pushers, and dog-walkers on their rounds have all gawked at 1066 South Franklin Street since its completion in July 2014. Now up for sale, the 6,700-square-foot park-side home built for Denver rock royalty can be yours—for a cool $4.05 million.

Custom-designed for Joe King, lead guitarist for Denver band the Fray, and his wife, actress Candice Accola, the five-bedroom, six-bathroom home takes design cues from New Orleans, the site of the couple’s wedding. “The whole form glows at night,” says listing broker Maggie Armstrong of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty, who is listing the property with her partner Trish Bragg. “There’s a New Orleans feeling throughout, from the authentic Bevolo gas lanterns out front to the brass fixtures inside. The home is uniquely warm but also very current.”

Situated on a coveted lot just across from the park, the modern home was designed and built by Carlos Alvarez of Alvarez Morris Architectural Studio, and Stephen Stone and Matthew Pierce of Character Builders. The exterior features handmade bricks from North Carolina, set in an exacting—and eye catching—pattern. A three-story mahogany-slat “screen” on the front facade’s A-frame-inspired form provides privacy and helps the streamlined structure blend with the neighborhood’s aesthetic—with a nod to modern design. At the rear of the property, a matching mahogany deck surrounds a heated outdoor pool.

Inside, an open floor plan makes the main level ideal for indoor/outdoor entertaining. A chef’s kitchen features custom cabinetry handmade in Denver by Aspen Leaf Kitchens and a massive marble-topped island with seating for five on Parisian bistro chairs. Other special touches include reclaimed maple floors from a Virginia textile factory, vintage white cedar ceilings, exposed brick walls, burnished brass plumbing fixtures, and concrete mosaic tiles imported from Mexico.

Upstairs, each bedroom includes a private balcony with views of the backyard. King’s third-floor studio, which opens onto a west-facing rooftop deck, is one of Armstrong’s favorite features. “In the winter you see the mountains, and in the summer you get that great energy of the park,” she says. “But when you are sitting on the sofas up there, no one can see you. It’s completely private.”

A few interested buyers are circling the property, so if this is your dream home, Armstrong says you shouldn’t delay. Given the price tag and celebrity factor, only those with proof of funds will be shown the house. But for the rest of us, drooling over the photos doesn’t cost a thing.
