A few weeks ago, it seemed that July had disappeared and a rainy October day appeared right in the middle of our summer. I dug past the sundresses and tank tops in my closets to find warmer cardigans and fleeces.

Even though the skies were gray and I was shivering, I still had a taste for summer. So I headed straight for Cuba Cuba and its half-price happy-hour mojitos.

Cuba Cuba resides in a charming house at the corner of 12th and Delaware streets. A conga drum and lively Latin music greeted me on the way in, and I immediately felt warmer. When an energetic bartender informed me that sangria and Corona are also half price during happy hour, and I forgot about the weather altogether.

I arrived just after the restaurant opened, and it didn’t take long for the room to fill up, with mojitos flying out of the bar.

The original mojito is a must-try, with generous amounts of fresh mint and lime, as well as a good kick of rum. Of course, I had to taste the blackberry mojito, as well, which adds just the right amount of sweet and tart blackberries to balance the flavor. (Mango, strawberry, coconut, and pineapple mojitos are also available for those who need a fruit fix.)

While two mojitos were plenty for that afternoon, other menu offerings—such as the Argentinian beer selection and the strawberry caipirinhas—are enticing me to return. Barring any unseasonal weather, I’ll seek out a spot on the back patio, though I appreciate that Cuba Cuba brings the summertime feel year-round inside.

Cuba Cuba’s happy hour runs 5 to 6:15 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with half-price mojitos, sangria, Corona, and Corona Light.
