The USA Pro Cycling Challenge is more than halfway over and Timmy Duggan sits 21 seconds out of the yellow jersey. Tejay Van Garderen reclaimed the race lead even after Germany’s Jens Voigt exploded in an individual effort for nearly the entire stage. The 40-year-old is the USA Pro Cycling Challenge’s oldest racer and he averaged 300 watts over the four-hour race, along with burning 4,200 calories (That’s the equivalent of 26 New Belgium Fat Tire beers). Check out his full race analytics from TrainingPeaks.

Lafayette-based analysis company TrainingPeaks hooked us up with insider stats on Duggan’s performance, too. TrainingPeaks’ cycling software monitors and analyzes everything from power to heart rate, speed, elevation, distance, and pace.

NAME: Timmy Duggan, Liquigas-Cannondale

RANK: 18th overall, 35th in Stage 4

STAGE 4 SUMMARY: Duggan stayed tucked inside the peloton like all but one of the racers on Thursday. The riders had their first major bout with slick roads and had to take on Independence Pass for the second time in as many days. On the return trip out of Aspen, Duggan climbed and descended the pass in nearly half the time that it took him in Stage 3. Maybe not having just climbed Cottonwood Pass helped his ability to crank out more power.

DUGGAN’S STAGE 4 HIGHLIGHTS:

Riding with the Pack: Jens Voigt cruised out of the peloton and never looked back. In the process, Voigt burned two-thirds more energy than Timmy Duggan and the rest of the pack due to facing headwinds straight on.

Staying in the Hunt: Duggan, along with the rest of the peloton, were content letting Voigt stray. But with 10 minutes left in the stage, Duggan kicked his up his pedal power to the day’s six-minutes peak with an average of 326 watts and an max of 768 watts. This effort ensured he stayed in contention for a podium spot on Sunday.

Power numbers (Entire Stage):

Power: 192 watts (average); 780 watts (maximum)

Speed: 51.3 kph (maximum)

Heart Rate: 145 beats per minute (average); 189 bpm (maximum)

Cadence: 87 rotations per minute (average); 137 rpm (maximum)
