In preparation for last night’s trick or treaters, I spent $30 on candy and dressed up like a fly fisherman. But not one ghoul, ghost or goblin showed up, so I spent the rest of the night in waders, eating my own candy supply: Butterfingers, Laffy Taffy, SweeTarts, Whoppers, you name it. And, of course, I crashed.

Sugars are absorbed into the bloodstream as glucose (this happens quickly with simple sugars found in, say, Gobstoppers), which is then converted into energy. When you don’t use the energy created by eating 40 small candy bars in one sitting, the leftover energy is turned into fat—not to mention tooth decay. And eating sugary treats on a regular basis can lead to diabetes or heart disease.

Thankfully, for the weak-willed and parents who need help getting rid of their kids’ stash, there’s a place to purge. Denver dentists are buying back candy at $1 a pound and sending it overseas to troops. Go to Halloween Candy Buy Back and enter your zip code to find your nearest drop-off.

LiveWell Colorado has also joined in the let’s-save-these-kids-from-themselves game. The organization is offering to take candy in exchange for fresh fruit, jump ropes, frisbees and more, this Friday and Saturday. Bonus: TerraCycle will recycle the candy wrappers, and you’ll be entered to win a pair of Justin Bieber tickets.
