Here’s some good news: Sassafras American Eatery, one of my top picks for breakfast and lunch, is opening a second location. Although co-owner Julia Grother won’t divulge exactly where the spinoff will open (the original sits in Jefferson Park), she did narrow the field. She says she’s waiting for an agreement to be finalized in one of the following neighborhoods: Capitol Hill, Washington Park, or the DU area.

The concept will be similar, with one major addition: a liquor license. “It’ll be a sister Sassafras with alcohol,” Grother says. “We’ll serve breakfast and lunch and it’ll have our same cheekiness and refined Southern and Cajun menu.”

The name may or may not remain the same; if the historic building Grother is considering comes through, she says the restaurant’s name may reflect that location.

All vagueness aside, I’m just excited to have another Sassafras to visit—cue more of the fried green tomato sandwiches and wedges of the heavenly gooey cake.
